2010/11 Visual Arts Academy Brief Course Descriptions
2-D VISUAL ARTS
DRAWING – A beginning level year long course of observational drawing and works on paper. This class covers observational, abstract and non-objective drawing skills, drawing media, and the elements and principles of design.
LIFE DRAWING – An intermediate level year long drawing course focusing on the development of a portfolio of work utilizing observational drawing from still-life and the human figure.
AP DRAWING – Students must have the recommendation of their 2-D visual arts teacher to be enrolled in AP Drawing. This year long course will focus on advanced levels of drawing (mark making) and the development of a unique creative approach in various drawing media. Students are expected to create a portfolio of 24 works of art – of which 12 images investigate a strong underlying visual theme in drawing and 12 images explore a variety of concepts and approaches to drawing.
PAINTING – A beginning level year long course exploring various painting styles, media and techniques as well as the elements and principles of design.
PAINTING 2 – An intermediate level year long painting course focused on expanding and improving technical and creative painting skills. Emphasis will be placed on complexity of concept and content and the development of a unique approach to painting.
DESIGN (A/B) – A beginning level year long course covering the elements and principles of design utilizing drawing, painting, ceramics and computer graphics. This class will introduce painting, color theory, 3-D design via ceramics, and digital art using Adobe Photoshop.
AP 2-D DESIGN – Students must have the recommendation of their 2D visual arts teacher to be enrolled in AP 2-D Design. This year long class will focus on advanced levels of design (elements and principles) utilizing a variety of 2-D media. Students are expected to create a portfolio of 24 works of art – of which 12 images investigate a strong underlying visual theme in 2-D design and 12 images explore a variety of concepts and approaches to 2-D design.
MEDIA ARTS
PHOTO 1 – A beginning level year long course in fine art photography and digital image making instructed from both a creative and technical standpoint. The primary focus is hands-on experience with cameras, combined with study, research (books, web, films), discussions, lectures and critique. Emphasis will be placed on image composition, knowledge of the elements and principles of design and related fine art skills. Students will also study and research the history of photography and learn from the masters.
PHOTO 2 – An intermediate level year long course focusing on more advanced creative and technical understanding of both film-based and digital photography. Digital and traditional darkroom editing processes and printing will be utilized.
GRAPHIC DESIGN – an intermediate level course using traditional media and computer technology to create graphic arts. Students will develop a portfolio of concepts and artworks for both commercial and fine arts purposes such as logos, posters, advertisements and digital fine art prints.
ANIMATION – A beginning and intermediate level after-school course offered in partnership with CAL ARTS developing basic and more complex levels creative and technical abilities in animation and claymation.
3-D VISUAL ARTS
CERAMICS – A beginning level year long course working with clay in creating unique 3-D pieces of art using hand building and wheel techniques.
CERAMICS 2 – An intermediate level course working with clay in creating unique and complex 3-D artworks using hand building and wheel techniques.
AP 3-D DESIGN – Students must have the recommendation of their 3-D visual arts teacher to be enrolled in AP 3-D Design. This class will focus on advanced levels of 3-D design (elements and principles) utilizing sculpture, ceramics and various 3-D media. Students are expected to create a digital portfolio of approximately 16 works of art – of which 8 works investigate a strong underlying visual theme in 3-D design and 8 images explore a variety of concepts and approaches to 3-D design.
ART HISTORY
ART HISTORY – A beginning level year long survey of major periods of art history. The course will incorporate study skills, note taking, and studio artwork in response to various periods of art history. Students will get a basic overview of what inspires artists and how thinking about art has changed based on changes in social, cultural and technological developments over time.
***Note 9th graders are required to take:

11th and 12th graders enroll in their interest/specialization as program space permits.
