Dance Course Offerings

Core Course Offerings

The core dance program comprises Ballet, Modern Dance, and Choreography. These are mandatory. Student placements are based on skill level.

Ballet

Ballet 1

This course introduces students to technique, vocabulary, and historical development of classical ballet. Emphasis is placed on strength, balance, flexibility, coordination, endurance, and agility through barre exercises, center floor, and across-the-floor combinations.

Ballet 2

Students continue to hone and extend their skills in classical ballet form. Emphasis is placed on correct anatomical alignment, turnout, control, elevation, and sensitivity to line. The historical development of ballet is studied, including major ballets, choreographers, dancers, and ballet companies.

Ballet 3

This course is designed to present intermediate technique, vocabulary, and the historical development of classical ballet in the 18th and 19th century. Students will continue to gain strength, balance, flexibility, coordination, endurance, and agility through barre exercises, center floor and across-the-floor combinations. Exercises will focus on more intermediate ballet barre, center adagio, allegro work, and across-the-floor combinations. Students will be introduced to basic choreographic principles as they relate to ballet. Emphasis will continue be placed on correct anatomical alignment, turn out, control, elevation, and sensitivity to line. The historical development of ballet in the 18th to the 19th century including major ballets, choreographers, dancers, and ballet companies.

Ballet 4

A continued study of classical ballet technique with emphasis on the progression of technical complexities for total understanding. Ballet 4 is a performance-based class, focusing on mastering technique and challenging students strength, stamina, and cohesive fluidity—the emphasis is on building strength, coordination, control, stability and movement.

Cultural Dance

The purpose of this course is to develop an appreciation of the cultural background and recreational value of dance. This course provides an opportunity for students to learn basic skills, basic steps, and different combinations of steps and patterns to a variety of traditional recreational dance forms through a variety of rhythms and musical styles. They will investigate the role of dance in historical and contemporary cultures. Students build understanding about human diversity—differences and commonalities—through dance.

Modern Dance

Modern 1

This course introduces students to modern dance technique and vocabulary. Emphasis is placed on balance, coordination, flexibility, strength and endurance in the various styles of modern dance, with attention to dynamic alignment, body awareness, increasing ease and range of motion, and personal expression.

Modern 2

This course adds intermediate-advanced work to previous skills acquired in various styles of modern dance. Students display the ability to execute complex technical and musical combinations with knowledge of stage and musical terms.

Elective Course Offerings

Choreography 1

This course challenges students to use improvisation, composition, and choreographic principles to explore and refine the creative process in dance. Projects include individual and group works for studio performance and the concert stage.

Choreography 2

This course expands upon the principles gained in Choreographic Process 1. Projects include individual and group works for studio performance and the concert stage.

Hip Hop

Hip hop is a youth culture that emerged in the 1970s in the South Bronx, New York. Its primary elements include b-boying, MCing, DJing, graffiti, and the pursuit of knowledge. As a dance, hip hop developed in social settings--at block parties, in parks, at school dances, and in the clubs. Though b-boying and various party dances are at the root of hip-hop dance, multiple related forms are grouped under the street dance umbrella. These include house dance; the West Coast funk styles—popping and locking; the disco era's waacking; the gay ball scene's voguing; and such newer forms as krumping and jookin' that continue to emerge on a daily basis. This class will provide students with a foundation in key street dance techniques. Rigorous conditioning will help students develop the strength and stamina required to successfully perform these dances. Students will be encouraged to develop their individual style through both freestyle exploration and choreographed sequences. Familiarity with the historical context for each dance will be required.

Elective Course Offerings—Student Placements Based on Skill Levels

Tap 1

This course introduces students to the technique, vocabulary, and historical/ cultural development of tap dance. Emphasis is placed on rhythm, syncopation, timing, coordination and listening skills through exercises and tap combinations. Students research and study influential figures from tap’s African/Irish/American roots to the late 1900's. Music terminology and musical genres that have influenced tap will also be studied.

Tap 2

This course expands skills acquired in Tap 1. Emphasis is placed on complex rhythms, syncopation, timing, coordination and listening skills through exercises and tap combinations. Students are expected to know and use music terminology and musical genres that have influenced tap.

Dance Company

By audition only. This advanced course focuses on refining technical proficiency, artistic expression, and creative fluency. Students create, rehearse and perform established choreography and original works, through that process honing ensemble skills, repertoire maintenance, and performance techniques. The class culminates in a fully produced performance of completed works in the spring. Additional rehearsal time required.
